Humble beginnings

Our story began in 1975 when a group of orthotists founded the business with the aim to provide orthotic products and services.  Over a number of years the business evolved, and the focus was shifted from orthotics to assistive technology which was a new and upcoming sector in Australia. The business went through a major change when Rhonda and Iain Hogg acquired the company in 2000. Quickly renaming it Specialised Wheelchair Company to better describe what the company does best. They have been running Specialised Wheelchair Company as a family business since. The rest is history.
I remember the very first complex case we had. There was this quadriplegic lady who couldn`t move her head due to an operation. After several unsuccessful trials of many different methods to drive a power wheelchair her therapist came to us and asked us for help. There was nothing readily available on the market back then so I had to be creative. We trialled a fibre optic switch connected to her wheelchair control enabling her to drive her wheelchair with her tongue and chin, there was not a dry eye in the room, and that included me. From that moment I decided that I was going to follow my passion and help as many people as I can and improve as many lives as possible.

You can’t fake passion

This passion to improve lives still drives Iain and Rhonda today and it shows in everything they do.

It shows when they bring all the different products and brands together to offer custom and unique solutions for individuals. It shows when they train and motivate every single person in their team to go that extra mile. It shows in the relationships they have developed with not only the clients but also the prescriber occupational therapists who wouldn`t go to anyone else because they know that Specialised Wheelchair Company care and above all they do everything they can to solve the seating and functional needs of their customers.

Big enough to make a difference, small enough to care.

At Specialised Wheelchair Company we provide ongoing education to our Product Specialists so they are familiar with the latest products, technology and solutions. We don`t sell products, instead we focus on you: the client, your needs, and we offer solutions. Very often it means that we come up with a custom solution to suit the client requirements. These can be made and manufactured at our local workshop providing a shorter lead time on these products.

As proud members of the Assistive Technology Suppliers Australia Ltd (ATSA) and Australian Rehabilitation & Assistive Technology Association (ARATA) you can rest assured that all our products and solutions meet the highest standards. We are also a registered NDIS Provider which means we can assist you with different funding options to improve your lifestyle.

Since 2004 we have been Quality Assured, meaning that every year our systems, procedures and management are independently audited.

Dealing with a Quality Assured Company gives you the confidence you are dealing with a company that will deliver quality products and services.

“Every product we sell has my guarantee on it and I personally take an interest in your satisfaction. Feel free to contact me anytime.”

Iain Hogg, Managing Director
